Why it’s done
Botox was first introduced in 1989 and is used by many men and women to reduce signs of aging. It is non-surgical process that aims to reduce wrinkles and lines on the face and neck through relaxation of these muscles from Botulinum toxin injections. These injections block specific chemical signals that cause the muscles in the face to contract. Though Botox treatment is primarily used for cosmetic reasons, there are other benefits to using the injections since it positively affects how your body functions. The examples listed prove that Botox can address issues beyond frown lines.
1. Chronic Migraine
Patients who have experienced migraines for more than 15 days in a single month can benefit from Botulinum injections. Studies confirmed the drug reduced migraines when patients reported fewer migraines after receiving the injections. When Botox is injected into the neck and shoulder, forehead, it releases tension in these muscles which relieves strain on the nervous system. This process together lessens the pain of migraines since less tension is surrounding the nervous system.
2. Reduces Sweating
Hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating, is reduced after Botox injections. Since Botox relaxes the muscles around the area where it is injected, the drug reduces the amount of sweat secreted from the glands around the injection area. Symptoms of excessive sweating will be reduced for up to 6 months after the first treatment. Botox is FDA-approved for hyperhidrosis.
3. Overactive Bladder
According to The National Institute of Health, the use of Botox to treat patients with overactive bladder is becoming fairly common. When Botox is injected into the bladder, the bladder is able to increase in capacity. Depending on the amount used the effect can last several months.
4. Lazy eye and Twitching
Strabismus, also known as lazy eye is caused by an imbalance in the muscles responsible for positioning the eye which may lead to cross eyes. Blepharospasm, the twitching of the eyelids, can be reduced from Botox injection as well. Botox temporarily paralyzes eye muscles in small doses. Treatment lasts for months after injections and can even cause a permanent change in the alignment of the eye.
5. Non-surgical
The word ‘surgery’ can cause tension and stress to patients who may still want to improve their appearance or body complications. Botox treatment does not include incision, stitches, scarring, bruises, cuts, or recovery time. This benefit in particular is a highlight for people who want the benefits that cosmetic surgery can bring but do not want the hassle and complications that usually result from cosmetic surgery.
Botox injection usually takes about 10 minutes and improvement is usually seen days after the injection. Patients can resume normal daily activities right after the procedure. To maintain the effects from Botox, patients should expect regular follow-up injections. For long results that improve appearance and reduce symptoms of other medical conditions, Botox injection is now a beneficial option for patients.
